Short Story: The Subscription Box Curated Just for Petite Women Under 5’4

Short Story Box is a clothing subscription that caters to women 5’4 and under! That’s right! The first personal styling service for petites!

If you’re reading this, you most likely know the struggle of shopping for clothes as a woman under 5’4. Pants are always too long, waistlines rarely fall at the right place, and straps never stay in place! Well, Short Story Box is here to help us petite women out with fashionable pieces that fit in all the right places!

This post is sponsored by Short Story Box. As always all written content and opinions are my own. See full disclosure HERE.

Why shop for petite-specific clothing?

I’ll start with my number one reason for the need for petite-specific clothes. Tailoring is expensive! I usually try to find pieces that don’t need to be tailored, but sometimes there is no avoiding the tailor. I’m talking $20 per pair of pants I need to be hemmed! If you need something more complicated then you know it’s going to cost way more than that!

Plus, women under 5’4 not only need pieces that are the correct length, but we need shorter rises in our trousers, shorter torsos, and narrower shoulders in our tops and dresses!

With petite sizing, you can avoid the tailor altogether! When you get your box from Short Story you are given pieces that have the correct proportions for petite women. The dresses are shorter, pants won’t sag, and outerwear that doesn’t swallow you up!

How it Works

Short Story is a personal styling service for women under 5’4. When you sign up for Short Story you start the process by taking a style quiz so they know exactly what pieces will suit your personal needs. You are then sent a box of 5-6 items right to your door that you can try on at home. You have five days to decide what you would like to keep and what you would like to send back. When you order your box you are charged a $25 styling fee. If you decide to keep any of the pieces that styling fee will be applied to the cost of the items you wish to keep!

If you have items in your box you don’t need, then send them back with the prepaid shipping label. Make sure to log in to your account so you can give feedback on the items that you received.

You can also adjust the frequency of the deliveries to suit your own needs.

Sizes offered

Short Story Box offers sizes 00P-20P.

What is the cost?

As mentioned before you are charged a $25 styling fee. If you decide to keep something from your box, you apply that $25 to that item. The styling credit does not roll over month to month, so you will still have to pay that fee even if you don’t keep anything.

Short Story Box has pieces between the price range of $35 to over $150. When you take your quiz you can specify your budget so you won’t be surprised with anything that is outside of the range you’d like to pay.

What pieces will I receive?

When you take your style quiz you tell your personal stylist what items you are interested in receiving. Short Story has tops, pants, jeans, jackets, dresses, jumpsuits, and accessories to choose from! I did not need any accessories or jackets, so when I took my style quiz I left those items out.
What brands are available?

Short Story Box carries a variety of brands such as Joe’s Jeans, Vince Camuto, Amour Vert, Good American, and more. They even have their Short Story clothing line that you can get when you sign up for a subscription!

What I Got in My Short Story Box

In my style quiz, I requested pieces that I could wear on casual occasions as well as items I could potentially wear to work. I usually struggle with finding pants, jumpsuits, and dresses that aren’t too long, so it was great that my box included a few of those items! As I tried on each item I could tell that the quality of each piece was beautiful.

Zoe Open Back Long Sleeve Jumpsuit by Monteri

Jumpsuit by Monteri

Having a few jumpsuits in your wardrobe just makes life so easy. The problem is that as someone who is only 5ft tall, most jumpsuits don’t fit right. The waist is usually too low and the legs are always too long! So, when I received this jumpsuit in my Short Story Box I was very happy. I just love everything about this jumpsuit. The color, the fit, and how comfortable it is! It even has a cute peekaboo cut-out in the back as a little added detail!

Hanson Straight Leg Jeans 29 1/4″ by Democracy

Hanson Straight Leg Jeans and Sweater Cardigan Coat

Jeans are another huge pain point for me! Not only are they typically too long but most jeans I try on have that annoying gap in the back. These jeans by Democracy were comfortable, stretchy, and made with super soft fabric. Unfortunately, they were a little too big for me around the waist. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the whickering detail or the color. This is one item that I will be sending back.

Jolanda Long Lapel Sweater Cardigan Coat by Thread & Supply

I LOVE this cardigan! This cardigan by Thread & Supply is worth every penny! The quality of this coat is stunning! The fabric and details with the lapels elevate this piece. You can dress it up or dress it down. It’s incredibly comfortable and the length is perfect!

Valentina Double V Bodysuit by Second Skin

Valentina Double V Bodysuit and Cardigan Coat by Thread & Supply

Bodysuits are another huge pain point for us petite ladies. Since we have shorter torsos, bodysuits are often too long! This Second Skin body suit was the perfect fit! It hugs your curves and moves with your body so you feel very comfortable in it! It reminds me of some other very popular skin-tight bodysuits, except this one is made for us shorter ladies!

Betsy V-Neck Side Twist Dress by Petite Assembly

Betsy V-Neck Side Twist Dress by Petite Assembly

This dress is so flattering! The twist detail and length accentuate your curves. The Betsy V-Neck is a great option for those of you who work in an office environment or have a work event to attend. I could even see pairing this with a blazer for a more professional look!

Mickie Wrap Smocked Top by Gilli

Mickie Wrap Smocked Top by Gilli

You really can’t go wrong with a wrap top. A wrap-style top is flattering on so many different body types. As with the other pieces that I received, the quality is top-notch! While I do like a good leopard print I am not as crazy about the contrasting white and blue shades. When I send this top back I can provide feedback to my stylist so they know to steer clear of this print for the next box!

Chiara Scallop Sleeve Texture Top by Monteri

Chiara Scallop Sleeve Texture Top by Monteri

This is another great top for work or to dress up a pair of jeans. I loved the color of this top and that the V-neck wasn’t too low so you don’t have to worry about your undergarments showing. This top would look great paired with the Thread and Supply cardigan that I received in this box!

Overall Thoughts

Short Story Box makes it so easy for petite women to discover new brands and pieces of clothing that fit! We all know that shopping for petite clothes can be frustrating and time-consuming. Having your stylist curate pieces for your wardrobe is a game changer as they take the guesswork out of finding pieces that fit! I would highly recommend looking into Short Story Box for all your petite styling needs!
