Believe it or not, there was a time when I refused to wear a maxi dress. I thought short girls shouldn’t wear them because they would overwhelm a petite frame. While that can be true, if you find a maxi that fits your proportions, it can elongate your body and make you look taller.
Now maxi dresses are one of my favorite pieces to wear and style. They make it so easy to feel put together, even when you’re in a rush. Whether you’re dressing for work, the weekend, or even a formal event, there are so many creative ways to style a maxi dress and make it your own.
Here are my favorite ways to style a maxi dress! I’ve included some new tips I’ve picked up since I first wrote this post!
10 Ways to Style a Maxi Dress

Belt it!
A belt instantly adds shape to a loose-fitting maxi dress and brings structure to your outfit. I used to love corset belts for a little drama, but these days I also reach for thinner belts or statement buckles to add polish.

Try a leopard print belt to dress up a black maxi or pick a belt that highlights one of the colors in your floral maxi dress for a pulled-together look.
Blazer

A tailored blazer gives a maxi dress a polished edge. I found this yellow blazer at Nordstrom Rack and love how it turns a casual dress into something sleek and work-appropriate.
For a more defined waist, add a belt over your blazer. This look works great for date night, meetings, or special occasions where you want to feel elevated but still comfortable.
Knot it!

Because I’m only 5’0″, knotting my dresses is a must. It helps adjust the length, adds some interest to the hemline, and shows off your shoes.
Even if you don’t need the extra height, tying a knot to one side gives your maxi dress a whole new shape.
Add a Hat

A wide-brimmed hat adds an effortless, chic vibe. It can make even the simplest maxi feel elevated, and it’s perfect for hiding bad hair days.
I found one of my favorite hats at a street vendor in NYC, but you can find cute, affordable options at Target or online.
Throw a Tee over it

Wearing a cropped or knotted graphic tee over your dress creates the illusion of a maxi skirt. It’s one of my favorite casual styling tricks and a great way to get more wear out of your dresses.
I usually pair this look with sneakers or ankle boots to keep it fun and edgy. It’s a great street style outfit for running errands or hanging out on the weekend.
Vest or denim jacket

A denim jacket or a structured vest is perfect for transitioning a summer maxi into fall. It adds warmth without covering up your whole outfit.
Keep one on hand for cool nights or indoor spaces with too much AC. It’s an easy layering piece that never goes out of style.
Kimono

For a softer, more romantic look, layer your maxi with a flowy kimono. It adds movement and coverage without feeling heavy.
This is a great option for warmer days when you want to cover your arms or simply switch up your outfit without too much effort.
Pair It with a Leather Jacket

A leather jacket adds instant edge to a feminine maxi dress. I especially love pairing one with a floral maxi dress for a contrast between soft and tough textures.
Add combat boots or chunky ankle boots to complete the look. This combo is great for concerts, cool-weather date nights, or when you just want to feel a little bold.
Go Monochrome

Wearing one color from head to toe can make your whole outfit feel elevated. Try a matching maxi dress, shoes, and accessories in shades of beige, black, or even bold colors like red or cobalt.
Monochrome looks are flattering and make a big impact with minimal effort.
Dress it up for date night!

The right accessories can take your maxi dress from casual to glam in minutes. I love adding gold jewelry, a bold lip, and a pair of heels.
If you’re dressing for formal events, opt for sleek hair, a clutch, and strappy sandals for a more elevated finish.
Maxi dresses are one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Whether you’re headed to brunch, a wedding, or just want something cute and comfortable for the day, the styling possibilities are endless.

Hello! You can wear flats with the skirt! The top you choose would depend on the style of the skirt. Is it a tight skirt or more loose fitting? If you have a picture of the skirt I could help you out more.
