8 Chic Ways to Style a Maxi Dress

Loving this maxi from Amazon!

Believe it or not, there was a time when I refused to wear a maxi dress. I thought that short girls shouldn’t wear maxi dresses because they overwhelm the frame. While that can be true if you find a maxi that is a good fit for your body type it can actually elongate your frame! Now maxi dresses are my favorite to wear and style because they make it so easy to look put together! So today, I’ve put together 8 ways to style a maxi dress.

8 Ways to Style a Maxi Dress

Throwback to when corset belts were super popular!

Belt it!

Adding a fun belt to a solid colored maxi is a great way to add a little personality to your outfit! The addition of a belt also helps to define your waist and create more of a shape with a loose-fitting dress. I added a corset belt to this maxi dress for a little definition and drama!

For a more casual look add a leopard print belt to spice up this simple black maxi. Both items from Amazon, score! If you have a printed maxi dress you could also add a belt in a corresponding color.

Belted the blazer for a more defined waist

A blazer adds some polish to an otherwise casual maxi dress. I found this yellow blazer at Nordstrom Rack at the end of spring but I have yet to actually wear it! This look is great for work (depending on how dressed up you need to get), a date night, or any other event you want to be comfortable but still look good!

Knot it!

Knotting a maxi dress is pretty much essential for me because I am only 5’0 so you can imagine that most dresses are waaay too long! If that’s not the case for you, you can still switch up the style by adding a knot to create a different shape. Above I have my dress knotted on one side to create an asymmetrical shape.

A hat can really change the way your entire outfit looks. There is just something about adding a hat that makes you seem extra chic and cool. Plus if you are having a bad hair day it covers it right up! I found my hat from a street vendor while shopping in NYC but Target has some really cute ones right now!

Am I doing the Insta Badd pose right?? Lol!
This crop top makes it look like a completely different outfit!

Throw a Tee over it

Throwing a graphic tee over a maxi is one of my favorite ways to switch up my look! Especially with a bold graphic tee like this as it adds a little edge to my outfit. It also makes it look like I am wearing a skirt as opposed to a dress. I added some converse sneakers that I got during the Nordstrom sale to dress down the look even more!

Vest or denim jacket

A denim jacket is a great way to transition a maxi dress from summer to the fall months! Not that I want to be thinking about the fall fashion yet but it is right around the corner! You can always carry a denim jacket with you this time of year for those chilly summer nights!

Another option to spice up your simple maxi dress would be to add a kimono over top! It adds a little extra coverage and is such a pretty romantic look. Plus there are so many pretty kimonos out right now you’re sure to find one for you!

Earrings are from Velvet and Slate

Dress it up for date night!

Let’s get all glammed up for this one! Take you simple maxi dress up a notch by adding lost of gold jewelry, heels, and a bold lip! It’s funny how just adding some simple accessories can dramatically change your look!

What are some of your favorite ways to dress up a simple maxi dress?
