Are you wondering what to wear for apple picking? I have a few tips and style ideas to help you find the perfect outfit!
It’s September here in New Jersey, which means unpredictable temperatures, falling leaves, and fun autumn activities! One thing I love doing every year in September and October is going apple picking. Visiting a local farm and picking fresh apples is always a highlight, but the challenge is figuring out what to wear.
You might be tempted to throw on a cozy fall outfit with a sweater and boots, but sometimes the weather is still warm! Here are a few outfit ideas for early fall apple picking that will keep you stylish and comfortable.
Things to Consider When Deciding What to Wear
Before planning your apple-picking outfit, you’ll need to think about the weather and choose something suitable for the time of year. Early fall can be unpredictable on the East Coast, but in some places, it might still feel like summer. Mornings are often chilly, but by 1 pm, it can warm up and even feel like a beach day!
Layering is key when dressing for apple picking. I like to wear a lightweight jacket or sweater so that I can remove it if the weather heats up.
Comfortable footwear is also a must! I recommend closed-toed shoes like sneakers or boots, as you’ll be walking on grass and dirt paths. If you choose boots, opt for ones with a low or no heel, as you’ll be navigating uneven terrain. Although high chunky heels might seem tempting, the priority is comfort and safety. Thankfully, there are plenty of stylish and comfortable options, so you don’t have to sacrifice fashion!
Outfit Ideas for Apple Picking
Cozy Knit Sweater and Jeans
You can’t go wrong with a comfy sweater and jeans for apple picking. I purchased a thick orange sweater from Amazon last year, which has become my go-to for fall. It’s warm enough for chilly days, so you can skip the jacket. Just pair it with your favorite jeans and low-heeled boots!
Flannel Shacket and Jeans
Nothing says fall more than a plaid jacket! This outfit is super easy to recreate for apple picking. Underneath, I like to wear a simple top to keep things comfortable.
Shorts + Button-Down Top + Boots
I wore this outfit on a warm October day a few years ago. Believe it or not, temperatures can sometimes reach the 80s in late September or October! That’s why I opted for shorts and a lightweight top. It’s not your typical fall look, but you can swap the top for a more autumnal color to give it a seasonal vibe.
Wide-Leg Jeans + T-Shirt + Cropped Jacket
Wide-leg jeans are perfect if you want to feel comfortable while still looking stylish. I paired my distressed jeans with a simple T-shirt and a cropped jacket from Love, Bonito. The jacket has a cozy fall vibe and is comfortable to wear. While this specific jacket is sold out, Love, Bonito has a great selection of fall jackets!
Skirt + Bodysuit + Over-the-Knee Boots
Although I don’t typically wear skirts to the farm, I’m including this outfit for those who might want to dress up a bit more. I paired a faux leather skirt with a bodysuit and over-the-knee boots. These boots are easy to clean and have a low heel, making them practical and stylish!
Accessorizing Your Apple Picking Outfit
The outfits above are examples of what I’ve worn or would wear for apple picking here in New Jersey. Since it doesn’t get too cold this time of year, I haven’t included heavy jackets or thick sweaters. However, if you live somewhere with colder weather, you can use these outfits as inspiration and simply add a coat, scarf, or thick stockings for extra warmth.

Bags for Apple Picking
You’ll want to be hands-free while apple picking, which is why I recommend using a crossbody or belt bag. Amazon has some great, affordable options!
What to Avoid When Choosing Your Apple Picking Outfit
Avoid wearing open-toed shoes, heels, or any uncomfortable footwear, as you’ll likely be walking on uneven terrain. Heels can make it difficult to walk, and open-toed shoes might leave your feet vulnerable to getting hurt or dirty. Instead, opt for comfortable, closed-toed shoes like low-heeled boots or sneakers. Just keep in mind that white sneakers may not be the best choice, as your shoes are likely to get a bit dirty!
Apple picking is the perfect fall activity, but figuring out what to wear can be tricky with the unpredictable weather. By keeping comfort and layering in mind, you’ll be ready for anything the day throws at you. Whether you go for cozy sweaters, stylish jackets, or practical boots, you’ll have plenty of outfit inspiration for your next trip. Next time you’re wondering what to wear apple picking, you’ll have the perfect look ready to go!
