These tips for a weekend wellness routine will make going back to work on Monday a little easier!
Why do we have weekends? Fundamentally, they’re a break in the monotony of work that allows us to recharge. They’re a great way to unwind, relax and generally prepare yourself for the week ahead.
As productive, happy people, we should take our weekends just as seriously as we do the rest of the week. Finding time to put ourselves in a more relaxed state is essential to get us pumped for returning to the office on Monday morning.
But what should your weekend wellness routine actually look like? Let’s take a look.
Weekend Wellness Routine
Plan For Relaxation
You plan for work, so you should also plan for relaxation. Your body needs time and space away from the grind to restore itself.
Unfortunately, most people don’t plan for relaxation. Instead, they just assume that it will happen, without a great deal of thought.
That approach, however, can lead to trouble. Chores and replying to emails can take over your weekend, leaving you even more exhausted when Monday morning arrives. Make sure to take some time out for yourself. That might mean watching a T.V. show, practicing meditation,
Break The Diet Mentality
At the weekend, your food choices can be all over the place. Some people don’t have time to eat well during the week and so the weekend is an opportunity to correct this. And that’s great. But for others, the weekend is when they start to binge on all the things that they denied themselves Monday to Friday.
Now I’m not saying that you shouldn’t treat yourself to a nice dinner out or a drink. I love trying out different restaurants in the area or treating myself to a slice of pizza. But don’t use the weekend as an excuse to put just any and every type of junk food into your body. It’s all about balance. Have plenty of veggies and fruits with breakfast and lunch if you’re planning on going out to eat later.
Also, maybe don’t deprive yourself of the things you love to eat during the week. Find healthy variations of foods that you love so you’ll be less likely to overdo it on the weekends.
See your weekends as an opportunity to invest in your body. If you don’t have time to prepare meals during the week, batch cook on a Sunday afternoon.
Take Care Of Your Feet
If you’re walking around all week because of your job, it can take its toll on your feet. That’s why so many working women choose to get pedicures at the weekend. Not only do they make their feet look splendid, but they also eliminate rough skin, aches, and pains.
If you are trying to save money or prefer staying home then an at-home pedi is a great option! You can even do your own D.I.Y foot soak. I actually prefer this option so I can watch Netflix as I relax!
Taking care of your feet leaves them feeling light and refreshed for Monday morning. Slipping into your work pumps never felt so good!
Spend More Time Outdoors
Human beings shouldn’t be stuck in boxes all day long – whether it’s their home or office. They should be outdoors, getting up close and personal with nature.
Spending more time outdoors, therefore, is a great addition to your weekend wellness routine. Not only is it good for you, but it is also fundamentally relaxing. When people spend time near water, forests or in the mountains, it generates feel-good hormones that help them relax and enjoy their surroundings even more.
Being outside also supercharges the body’s production of vitamin D. This, in itself, can make you feel less exhausted and more energized as the week begins.
Drink More Herbal Teas
People tend to increase their consumption of sodas and alcohol at the weekend. But by bucking the trend, you can improve how you feel come Monday morning.
The effects of a heavy drinking session can last for days. If you go out all night on Friday, you can still feel tired and lethargic on Monday.
Before going out all night, ask yourself whether the experience is worth it. Yes – it might be enjoyable at the time. But you always wind up paying for it later. It could even affect your performance at work – and you certainly don’t want that.
Plus there are so many incredible brands and flavors of tea these days! Check out some of my favorites below!
Eat The Best Food
At the weekend you have more time to prepare food than during the week. It’s an opportunity, therefore, for you to eat the best food that you can. Instead of buying packaged sandwiches from the store, you can make meals using all-fresh ingredients.
Improve Your Workouts
Working out on weekdays is a challenge if you have a full-time job. It’s both exhausting and you often lack the time that you need to complete a proper session.
On the weekends, though, you have more time. You’re free to spend hours in the gym if you like, sampling every machine and set of weights that it has to offer.
Longer workouts aren’t necessarily better, but they can change how you feel. Going for a two-hour session in the gym or at the park can leave you feeling energized and rested at the same time.
The weekends are also an opportunity to try out classes that you wouldn’t normally consider. For instance, you might have time for a full yoga class session on a Saturday morning when you wouldn’t normally during the week.
Take Time Out From Electronics
Being constantly connected to the digital world isn’t good for our collective health. Everyone – including the most extroverted among us – needs a time out to unplug. There should be space in our week for us to enjoy the human experience for what it is.
Taking time out from electronics is difficult, especially since there are now so many of them in our homes. However, going camping in nature away from technology is a wonderful solution for this. It takes you far away from your devices and allows you to experience the rising and the setting of the sun, just as people would have once done long ago.
Take Time To Laugh
Laughing is one of the best ways to prepare yourself for the week ahead. It reminds you that you can still have a lot of fun in life and that you don’t have to take everything so seriously.
Many people schedule a time to laugh into their weekends. Wellness routines often involve inviting friends over for a get-together or planning funny activities with kids, animals, or a romantic partner. One of my favorite ways to get a laugh session in is to watch a funny movie or stand-up comedian!
Try to laugh for around 15 minutes per day during the weekend. You’ll be amazed at the difference that it makes.
Prepare Yourself For Success During The Week
Lastly, weekends are also an opportunity for you to prepare yourself for success in the week ahead.
It can be difficult gathering the energy to fight all the battles that you need to fight during the week. But when you have more time at the weekend, you can gather yourself mentally for the challenges ahead. Don’t spend too long focusing on them, but concentrate on getting your headspace right.
