Capsule Wardrobe Part 4: Basic Types of Outerwear

It’s time for part 3 of the capsule wardrobe series. Today we’re talking about the types of outerwear that you need in your closet. Here in New Jersey, the weather varies quite a bit. In the winter temps can drop below 20 degrees and in the summer it can get into the upper 90s. For that reason, I always have different types of outerwear on hand. That way I’m prepared for any weather forecast!

With this list of outerwear, you can pick and choose the pieces that best suit the weather where you live.

Denim Jacket

You can’t go wrong with including a denim jacket in your wardrobe. A denim jacket can go with many different outfits and is perfect for transitional seasons like spring and fall. While you can go with trendy distressed or embellished styles for your capsule stick with something more classic. Look for a fitted denim jacket in a sold light or dark wash. H&M has great options or you could go with the ever classic Levi’s denim jacket.

Leather Jacket

If you’ve been following me for a while then you know that I love a leather jacket. A leather jacket is a bit heavier than denim so it’s good for cooler days. There are many different options to choose from when picking out a leather jacket. My favorite is a black moto jacket that hits right at the waist which is especially flattering for us short girls.

I love how it adds a little edge to any outfit even a feminine flowy dress. If that’s not your style try out something like this or this. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be genuine leather. These days you can find high-quality faux leather. In fact, all of my leather jackets are faux leather!

Trench Coat

A trench coat is a chic and classic addition to any wardrobe. This is one piece that I have yet to find for myself as it’s a challenge to find one that isn’t too long for my height. A chic trench coat is perfect any time of the year and can be dressed up or down.

Lightweight Coat

I always have a lightweight coat for mild winter days and seasonal transitions. I opted for a puffer coat by Michael Kors and have had it for about three years. It’s the type of coat that doesn’t go out of style and is also high quality.

Heavy Coat

A have coat is a must-have if winters in your area can get very cold. I used to always wear a pea coat for winter but I realized it’s not always the warmest option. So I invested in a heavy layered puffer coat. It was important to get something very warm as I still enjoy going outside for a walk even in the cold weather.

I would also go with a coat that either falls right above your knee or hits calf length. I normally don’t go with coats that length because I’m only 5’0 however this style is all about practicality and staying warm.
