Capsule Wardrobe Part 3: Basic Dresses

White tiered dress from Target

Basic dresses are an optional item to add to the capsule wardrobe but I’d encourage you to include them for so many reasons. A basic dress in a neutral color can be dressed up or down. And they actually make getting dressed easier as you don’t have to worry about coordinating tops and bottoms. Plus, if you choose the right fabric you can find some very comfortable options!

Even though I am listing eight different styles of dress you don’t have to have them all in your capsule. I just find that these are the most versatile styles of dress to own. Pick one or two styles that suit your body type and lifestyle.

Not sure what a capsule wardrobe is? Check out a few of the past posts in this capsule wardrobe series. I get into the details about why you need one and all of the items you can include in your capsule.

Basic Dresses to Choose From for Your Capsule Wardrobe

I think that having a little black dress in your wardrobe kinda goes without saying. The LBD is essential to have for special occasions, events, or even just date night. There are so many different styles that you could choose but I prefer one that is form-fitting and hits just above the knee.

Floral Dress

Floral dresses have become a favorite of mine over the past few years. This print is classic and never really goes out of style. Plus, they are easy to dress up or down. You can check out how I make a floral dress edgier with a pair of combat boots HERE.

Maxi Dress

As a petite woman, I used to think that I couldn’t wear a maxi dress. Which isn’t the case at all. A maxi dress can actually be very flattering for petite women. You just need to find the right style and to make sure that the dress doesn’t drag on the floor. Anyways, a simple sold color maxi dress in a comfortable fabric is a great piece to have year-round. There are so many different ways to style a maxi that I did an entire blog post about it!

T-Shirt Dress

Who doesn’t love a comfortable t-shirt dress? You can go with a t-shirt dress that hits right above the knees, right below the knees, or go for one that is full length. Petite ladies try to avoid styles right below the knees as this can make you look shorter than you really are. T-shirt dresses are a favorite in the summertime as they are so effortless to style and wear.

Shirt Dress

A shirt dress is a great option to have in your wardrobe especially if you have to dress up for your 9-5. A shirt dress is that perfect in between item for when you need to look polished but not overly dressed up.

Sweater Dress

A sweater dress is another one of my favorite types of basic dresses. A sweater dress for the fall and winter months is perfect to pair with boots, tights, or both! This cozy cable knit sweater dress is so chic and I could even see wearing it for the transition from winter to spring with a pair of sneakers.

Formfitting Dress

For those days when you want to show off your curves, a formfitting dress is a perfect option. This is another basic dress that you can easily dress up or dress down. This Good American Body Sculpted Midi Dress would look amazing with a denim jacket and sneakers. Or you could dress it up with heels, sparkly jewelry, and a blazer.

Wrap Dress

Which one of these styles of basic dresses would you include in your capsule wardrobe? Let me know in the comments and share this post with someone who is looking to revamp their closet!

I have so many capsule clothes in my closet. They are usually tucked way back in the back of my closet. I pull one out and I’m like… hmmm haven’t worn this in 5 years! Lets wear it today! Yah, I keep my clothes until they fall apart LOL
