It’s time for part 2 of our capsule wardrobe series and today I’ve got you covered with all the bottoms you need in your closet! If you’re just joining us I’ve created a capsule series to help make getting dressed each day a breeze! Each week I’m publishing a post on the specific items you need in order to round out your closet.
The pieces that make up your capsule wardrobe shouldn’t be trendy or fancy. Instead, we are looking for quality items that you can wear over and over for the next few years. These classic pieces will serve as the foundation to your wardrobe allowing you to mix in trendier items as you see fit.

The 5 Basic Bottoms You Need in Your Capsule Wardrobe
Black pants are a must have because they go with everything and you can dress them up or down. My go-to style is a pair of black skinny pants. I know GenZ might call me old for my love of skinny jeans but they are just so flattering. And skinny jeans are easy to pair with most shoes and tops.
If skinnies aren’t your thing you can try out different styles to find what flatters your body. Either way black pants are perfect for when you don’t know what to wear. Simply throw on a dressy top with some heels and you’ll look instantly put together!
This kinda goes without saying but you need to have a good pair of jeans in your closet! I personally like a skinny or straight leg jean in a light and dark wash. Avoid distressed denim for your capsule wardrobe. As much as I love a good pair of destroyed jeans, they are not appropriate for every occasion. And they are more difficult to pair with other items in your closet.
Everyone has been talking about loungewear since March so I had to include joggers in this post. I find that joggers look more stylish than other styles of sweat pants. I like to pair them with a graphic tee and some sneakers to run errands. Plus, you can always elevate the look of your joggers with these tips!
When I’m not at work or out and about leggings are pretty much my favorite thing to wear. Leggings are such a great option to have in your wardrobe because you can wear them under dresses, tunics or for working out.
My favorite pair of leggings right now is the leather-look legging by Spanx. For years I resisted buying these because of the price point but I caved in during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. And I’m glad that I did because they are totally worth it. The fit is incredible and they come in petite sizes.
Skirts are an optional step in creating a capsule wardrobe but I figured I would include it in this post because it’s a nice option to have. When choosing a skirt for your capsule, go with something comfortable that you’ll wear time and time again. Slip skirts and pleated skirts are great because of their versatility. A pencil skirt is another great option if you work in a more formal setting.
Which one of these items do you need in order to round out your wardrobe? Finding the best fitting bottoms is always a little tricky for me as a petite woman. So I’m always on the lookout for the perfect fitting pieces. When I do find something that doesn’t need to be tailored I’ll be sure to let you know!
