I fist read about the corset trend making a comeback in the Wall Street Journal back in March. The article started off with an interesting observation about how the corset was originally created to exaggerate the female form. This was a symbolic of the second class status of women back in the 16th century. While there is still some controversy surrounding the corset (think waist trainers used by the Kardashians) the popular spring trend is not so much focused on creating a tiny waist as it is on just adding a little something extra to your outfit.
When I think of a corset I usually think about the 16th century corseted dresses that made a woman’s waist appear insanely small and squeezing her tightly all the way up to her bosoms. Not exactly something I would want to wear on a daily basis…or at all!
Instead of the traditional style that covers the entire torso, fashion bloggers and celebs are wearing a thinner corset that is placed around the middle of the waist. This gives the look a more relaxed feel while still defining the waist.
At first, I didn’t like the idea of the corset being worn in this way. It can look sloppy and unflattering if not you’re not careful as to what top you pair it with. After further researching the trend I found some bloggers wearing it in a way that really accented their bodies and outfit in a flattering way.
Here are a few belts that I found Polyvolor that I thought could look stylish paired with the right top.
1. SheIn(sheinside) V Neckline Tartan Belt Detail Top $18 2. Black Velvet Chain Belt $50 3. Icône Corset waist tee $29 4. Rare Khaki Eyelet Lace Up Belt $15 5. Yellow Short Sleeve Belt Layered Dress $30
Do you think I should go for it and purchase one of these belts? Honestly, I am still on the fence with this one. What do you think? Have you tried the trend yet?
