Hey there my lovely dazzlers! The holiday season is almost upon us and with it being Movember I thought that this would be the perfect time to talk about some simple ways that you can make healthy choices this month and beyond. If you haven’t heard of Movember before it is an organization that not only brings awareness to men’s health issues but funds various programs that research prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Oh and many fellas are growing out their staches this month in support of Movember!
No matter if you’re a man or a woman these 9 tips will help you to stay healthy all year long!
I don’t know about you but I can not function if I don’t get at least 7 hours of sleep! Sleep is needed for repair/restoration of bodily functions, mental clarity, regulation of your metabolism and so much more. Getting enough sleep also puts you in a better mood and will make you more productive!
If you have a difficult time falling asleep you may be in need of a nighttime routine. Click here for some suggestions for creating nighttime routine that suits you! Oh and a good essential oil diffuser is a great way to get a better nights sleep! Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and you’re ready for a good nights rest!
2. Morning Routines
Speaking of creating a relaxing nighttime routine having a morning routine is just as important. Mornings can be hectic especially if you have to be at work early! You have to decide what to wear, pack for lunch, make your coffee, and find your keys all before 7AM! But with a little planning the night before you can have a much calmer and productive morning. I take some time the night before to plan my outfit, breakfast and to gather my belongings. I also always get some kind of physical movement in the mornings to wake up my body and get the positive endorphins flowing! Which leads us to number 3…
Exercise is a non negotiable for maintaining my health and sanity! I need to incorporate some kind of movement into my day weather it’s kickboxing, weight training, or some light stretching. A good workout is seriously a mood booster! Not only that but exercise reduces your chances of developing diseases or health conditions, improves heart health, and supports bone and joint health. It also reduces stress which many, if not most people experience especially this time of year.
A lot of people (myself included) think that they are not good at meditating. You will hear people say “I can’t clear my mind”, “I just keep fidgeting” or “My mind won’t shut off and I keep thinking about all of the things that I have to do!” Over the past two years of incorporating meditation into my life I have learned that it’s OK that your mind doesn’t shut off! Meditation is a practice in which you make yourself aware of your thoughts, breath and your feelings. You don’t have to be perfectly still or meditate for an hour. If five minutes is all you can take of staying still than that is good enough. Heck, if you only have one minute to be still with yourself that’s OK too. The point of meditation isn’t to be perfect, it’s to recenter yourself, reduce stress and improve mindfulness.
Don’t know how to get started. Find an app or a YouTube video! Do I consider myself “good” at meditation now? Do I meditate every single day for over an hour? Absolutely not! But I have received many benefits from incorporating meditation into my life including the reduction of my anxiety!
The way that you eat has a huge impact on the way that you feel. I find when I eat too much sugar and not enough veggies, I feel sluggish and unable to think clearly. With the holidays fast approaching it can be really tricky to stick to eating healthy. I’m by no means suggesting that you should skip your favorite apple pie this Thursday. But, I am saying that if you stick to mostly healthy eating you will feel a lot better when you do decide to indulge. I will make an extra effort in the coming weeks to eat plenty of greens, and fruits in order to make sure that I get the nutrition that I need. One easy thing that I have been doing lately is having Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie everyday for breakfast. It’s a great way to start the morning and set the tone for the rest of the day!
I am not big on taking too many supplements but I have been taking a probiotic and multivitamin. Since starting the probiotic I have found that my digestion is better, and my skin is clearer! Most people do not get enough probiotics in their food everyday which is why taking a supplement can be so helpful.
I also have been taking a multivitamin just to insure that I am getting enough vitamins and minerals.
Another supplement that I have been using is a vegan protein powder. I have been enjoying Vega One and Vitacost brand. I try to make sure that the protein powder that I am using is as natural as possible and free of sucralose. Protein powders are great for a snack in between meals if you are feeling hungry or for making a protein smoothie for breakfast or lunch!
Remember when choosing a supplement to do your research to make sure that the brand is trustworthy. You want to find the most potent and natural supplements that you can find. I like to use this website to make sure that the supplements that I am purchasing are really made up of what is listed on the back!
7. Play / Free time
Kids aren’t the only ones who need time to play. Adults need play time too! It is so important to make time in your schedule for things that you love to do! Incorporating play into your life can reduce stress, increase your creativity and simply make you a happier person. What is considered play you ask? Anything that you love to do just for fun! Ride a bike, go to a trampoline park, play guitar, color in a book, gather your friends and have a game night. Do whatever it is that makes you smile and shakes up your normal routine!
8. Family and Friends
Never underestimate the power of surrounding yourself with people who support you. Just knowing that there is someone you can pick up the phone and call if you are in need of help is so powerful. If you feel like you haven’t found your “tribe” there are so many ways to connect with other people thanks to the internet! You can try meetup.com, joining a Facebook group or various other online communities.
9. Journaling / Gratitude
A journaling or gratitude practice is something that I have been working on getting into! Creating the practice of keeping a journal that is for your eyes only can provide great insight to your thoughts and feelings. It can also be a good way to relieve stress by getting your thoughts out of your head and onto the page! I really love this book by Katie Dalebout that gives you a bunch of prompts to guide you on through your journaling process.
